Accessory apartments, or granny annexes as they are otherwise known, will be one of the biggest home improvement trends of 2023, as multi-generational living becomes more popular.
The cost-of-living crisis is having an impact on many Brits at the moment, from older generations who cannot afford to go into care homes to young adults who are not able to raise enough money for a deposit on a house.
As a result, they are choosing to move back in with their children or parents respectively, which means some households have three generations living under one roof. It goes without saying this could get a little crowded, which is why more homeowners are considering building an accessory apartment with self-contained kitchen and bathroom facilities.
This allows the resident to have their own independence, while still being on the same premises.
Christiane Lemieux, interiors expert, told The Spruce: “As the economy has shifted, more and more families are opting to live under one roof as children come back or aging parents move in.”
Consequently, she noted: “Many homeowners are reconfiguring their rooms and floor plans… some are adding separate entrances and kitchens, while others are creating self-contained apartment units.”
When it comes to where to create these granny annexes, homeowners could build an extension to their property if they have enough room. Alternatively, they could get a garden room built, which does not require planning permission.
